Las Primas is an Argentine cumbia music group formed in late 1985. It marked a milestone in the genre by being a pioneer in its formation, composed exclusively of women. Their greatest hits were “Saca la Mano, Antonio”, “Lo Nene Con Lo Nene”, “Dame Una Alegría” and “El Negro No Puede”, among others.
Career
The group, which began in the mid-80s, went through different formations. Initially, it was made up of Josephina Stell, Daniela Mori and Mariana Colombatti, and then Mónica Garimaldi and Liliana Beis joined. Among the singers who were part of it were Fabiola Alonso, current wife of Miguel Ángel Cherutti and Karina Ranni, ex-partner of Miguel Ángel Pierri and current partner of lawyer Marcelo Biondi. In 2020, Daniela Mori and Josephina met again at an event in Córdoba; Natalia and Claudia joined, Daniela left, and Rita, the choreographer, joined. There were also groups in other countries, such as Spain and Mexico. In the United States, they were Tina Turner’s backing band.
Their song Saca la mano, Antonio was a huge commercial success, so much so that it was incorporated as a parody by Alberto Olmedo and Jorge Porcel in the film Rambito y Rambón, primera misiones (1986), directed by Enrique Carreras. They also made incursions into the cinema, where they were given a space to interpret their songs, such as Los colimbas al ataque (1987) with Olmedo and Porcel, and Las locas del extraño (1988), directed by Carlos Galettini with Emilio Disi, Jorge Porcel and Gianni Lunadei.4
In 1989, at the height of their success, Daniela and Josephina said goodbye to the La noche del Domingo program hosted by Gerardo Sofovich, and Fabiola and Liliana joined.
They made several television appearances in cycles, such as Sabatino con Paco Stanley, Pasión de sábado, and Tu cara me suena.
In their over thirty years of career, Las Primas won a million and a half plaques and received gold and platinum records. In April 2020, Josephina, Verónica Álvarez, Karina Ranni and Fabiola got together again to perform new versions of their songs aimed at raising awareness about caring for the environment and responsibilities in the face of the pandemic: Lava tus manos, Antonio and Lo nene en cuarentena5. In that same year, the short film and documentary Las Primas de Película was also released from Buenos Aires; Music with Love, an audiovisual work under the direction of Irving Sandria that carries the musical history of the Argentine group in the world of cinema from 1987 to 1989 divided into four parts, each of the members of the group tell their anecdotes and production data of each filming where the group participated, in those times mentioning the stage name Las Primas ensured success at the box office.6
